As a freelance textile designer, the journey has been a bumpy road of creativity, challenges, and growth. Here are three invaluable lessons that I have learned over my 10 years...
1. Embrace the Unpredictability of Creativity
In the world of textile design, embracing the unpredictable is an art in itself. I've learned that inspiration can strike at the most unexpected moments (usually after a 3-day creative block in the shower or when I'm trying to get to sleep!) and some of my best designs have emerged from those spontaneous bursts of creativity after a lull. Don't be hard on yourself when you feel in a dip, you'll always come out the other side.
2. Collaboration is Key to Innovation.
Textile design is not a solitary endeavour. Collaboration has been the magic ingredient. Working with diverse teams, from manufacturers to fellow designers, has exposed me to fresh perspectives and ideas. It's amazing how combining different skill sets and viewpoints can lead to innovative and unique creations.
3. Adapting to Trends Without Losing Authenticity.
In a fast-paced industry like textile design, trends come and go. While it's crucial to stay informed and adapt, I've learned that maintaining authenticity is equally important. Trends may inspire, but my unique voice as a designer is what sets my work apart. Striking that balance between staying current and staying true to my style has been a continuous learning process—one that has defined my signature aesthetic and kept my work relevant. Of course, there are always those jobs that test you! But I find I can always learn something from them. What lessons have you learned in your creative journey?
