Finding the Balance: Navigating Freelancing & Motherhood

As a freelancer and a mum, I've learned that achieving balance isn't just a goal; it's an ongoing journey filled with ups and downs, particularly at the moment, I think people often assume the hardest time in their lives are the younger years but that's far from my truth!

As a freelancer and a mum, I've learned that achieving balance isn't just a goal; it's an ongoing journey filled with ups and downs, particularly at the moment, I think people often assume the hardest time in their lives are the younger years but that's far from my truth!

Freelancing offers incredible flexibility, allowing me to pursue growing my own business and looking after my son. However, it also presents its unique set of challenges, especially when juggling the demands of parenthood.
From managing deadlines to potty training, every day brings its own set of responsibilities. Yet, amidst the chaos, I've discovered 5 key ideas that have helped me navigate this delicate balance:

Setting Boundaries: Establishing clear boundaries between work time and family time is crucial. This means carving out dedicated hours for work while also being fully present during my days with my son. Trying to keep my phone in the other room and not check emails till he is in bed ( very hard as I also worry I am missing something!).

Effective Time Management: Planning my week by simply writing down what I want to achieve each day in front of me on actual paper! Setting a little timer so I don’t let things take longer than I want has been game-changer.

Flexibility & Adaptability: Being open to adjusting plans and moving meetings when unexpected situations arise is essential.
Self-Care Matters: It's easy to get caught up in the week and before you know it, it’s the weekend, but prioritising self-care is so important. Whether it's taking a walk, a Homesense trip, a long child-free bath, or indulging in a hobby, carving out time for myself recharges my energy and enhances my productivity.

Seeking Support: I've learned that it's okay to ask for help when needed. Whether it's asking a grandparent, friend or partner to help out for a few hours or outsourcing certain tasks in my freelance work, delegating responsibilities can lighten the load and free up valuable time.

Balancing freelancing and motherhood is undoubtedly a journey filled with its share of challenges, but it's also incredibly rewarding. By embracing flexibility, setting boundaries, and prioritising self-care, of course, we can all have moments where the above goes out the window but you just have to remind yourself to get back into it when you start to feel that sinking feeling. 💪👩‍💻👶
